Emancipatory Lands (Tierras Libres) is a cross-media research to transform geopolitical man-made symbols -as flags and monuments- into borderless objects from nature, approaching decolonial identities through the imagery of wild vegetation and native trees. The performance and installation is a multipole flag made of local flora and carried out by a group of Gauchos in Garzón, Uruguay; reimagining their traditional processions through a communal flag that borne out its landscape. As a flag, this project is an open-ended exploration to learn from the unlimited condition of nature. As a performance, it is an invitation to learn from local rituals, traditions and festivities; translating both values -from nature and community- to major geopolitical structures.
Project developed with the participation of MICA students and in collaboration with MICA Day of Service, MICA Graduate Studies and Leslie King Hammond Fellowship Award.
